Royal Run: Tens of thousands of Danes run with Crown Prince Frederik

The Royal Run was launched in 2018 on the occasion of Frederik’s 50th birthday. Almost 80,000 Danes and also a German Prime Minister were there this year.

In 2020 Corona intervened – now everything is possible again: Denmark’s sport-loving Crown Prince Frederik (53) competed for the first time in the Royal Run, which he initiated.

And that several times and in different places: The heir to the throne first ran in Sønderborg near the German-Danish border over the distance of one mile (1.6 kilometers) and received support from Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU), like Show pictures of the route.

“It’s a fantastic day,” said Frederik in a good mood. Later he was also in Odense, before he wanted to run a lap of honor with Olympic and Paralympic participants that evening in Copenhagen and then also the ten-kilometer route.

After the Royal Run 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic and had to be postponed again this May, a total of almost 79,000 people had now registered for the runs in Sønderborg, Aalborg, Odense, the capital Copenhagen and Bornholm. For almost a third of the starters, according to the organizers, it was their first ever participation in a fun run. There were no restrictions: Denmark also abolished the last corona restrictions in the country on Friday.

The Royal Run was launched in 2018 on the occasion of Frederik’s 50th birthday. For the Danish royals it is also a kind of family project, as it became clear again on Sunday: Frederik’s wife Crown Princess Mary (49) completed the five-kilometer distance in Aalborg, the children Princess Isabella (14), Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine (both 10) started over the mile route in Copenhagen.
