The eighties began with the adaptation to the big screen of The Shinning by Stanley Kubrick that despite being considered a classic of horror movies, I do not agree with King at all.
The novelist revealed, in an interview with New York Timesthat what bothers him about Kubrick’s version is the character arc of Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson: while in his book the man gradually descends towards madness, it seems to him that in Kubrick’s film Jack acts “like a madman” from the beginning:
“He knew what he was supposed to do: he was supposed to express affection for his family and that the hotel just gradually overwhelms his moral sense and his love for his family.”
Notably The Shining is a novel in which King reflected his own struggle against alcoholism through the character of Jack Torrance.
Other film adaptations of his works that have achieved critical and commercial success are stand by me Y Miseryled by Rob Reiner in 1986 and 1990, the latter winner of an Oscar Award and a Golden Globe thanks to the performance of Katy Bates as lead actress; The Green Mile (1999) and The mist (2007) directed by Frank Darabont. The film version of Item saw its first part become the highest-grossing horror film in history, the second featured a cameo from King himself. Both were directed by the Argentine Andy Muschietti.

Darabont deserves a separate paragraph, who took the novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption as the basis for the film The Shawshank Redemption. Despite being a failure at the box office, it is the best rated on the specialized IMDb portal and was voted by the magazine Empire as the best in history in his poll The 201 Greatest Movies of All Time in March 2006.
