Andor is a political spy thriller with lots of action but also subtle moments.

Though the first reaction to the announcement of the series was skepticalsince the release of the trailers and the confirmation of Tony Gilroy as Showrunner the expectation began to grow and a lot. Gilroy, known for writing the Jason Bourne sagaconverted Rogue One from a possible disaster to the film with the most positive consensus of “the Disney era of Star Wars”. His work as co-writer and co-director of the film showed that understood from the beginning the story to tell, something that is also reflected in Andor: it is a series that knows what it wants to say and executes it with a mastery rarely seen in this franchise.
The scriptwriter of the series (and director in some episodes) focuses from the zero moment on build the character that appears in the movies from a completely different place. In turn, take advantage of that story to tell how oppression affects different sectors of the Star Wars universe. Since the workers cutting scrap until the politicians seeking to sabotage the Empire: The Rebellion that is hero in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) begins in small, raw, disconnected acts.

The series has a very marked structure. There will be two seasons of 12 episodes. The first will tell a year in the life of Cassian and the second the other four, until moments before Rogue One. In addition, both seasons are subdivided into narrative arcs of three episodes each. This very hard framework allows Gilroy and the shift manager, in this case Toby Haynes (Sherlock, Black Mirror), slowly build that tension so characteristic of spy movies.
in this serieseach sequence has a purpose for the characters and is well placed in the plot. For example, a scene where the character played by Stellan Skarsgård explains a lot about Andor’s past, doesn’t stop the plot and allows the suspense to continue to build literally around. Also, in this first arc, the focus is on ordinary people, their relationship with Cassian, and the world around them. Thanks to the rhythm and the subtlety of the execution, by the end, each character feels well developed and even fully embodied.

Not only the eye of Haynes and the pen of Gilroy are architects of this production. Editing is key to maintaining this rhythm without jumps or doubtful moments. While Nicholas Britell’s music (Succession, Don’t Look Up) it is absolutely different to the iconic John Williams and even so fits perfectly in this corner of the universe StarWars. In conjunction, all these elements build from small sequences to large montages with loud music and each feels like exactly what had to happen.
Despite this, the framework of narrative arcs in three episodes presents some fears for the future of the series. It is no coincidence that the first three are released together. The cuts between episode and episode are abrupt and even somewhat random. Seeing an arc in its entirety feels like a more complete experience. How is this going to work from next week when it comes out one episode at a time?

Finally, Gilroy has openly said that he is not a fan of Star Wars at all. This is something that differentiates him from most of the filmmakers who have participated in the franchise, who were marked by the saga from a very young age. It is also an issue that concerned fans who expect each story to feel like part of the same universe either in tone or through references, cameos, objects, etc. In this regard, Andor shows that the showrunner is open to collaborative work with Lucasfilm to combine his vision with the universe where it happens. Through objects, posters or dialoguesthe material connections to the galaxy are a constant in the environment and do not interfere with the plot or are ignored.
Perhaps what surprises a lot is the general tone resulting from the series. The rawness of the lives of these characters and the seriousness with which the production takes itself moved many to say that it is a more “adult” show. I do not consider it such Star Wars was from its conception a modern mythology designed for children who become adults to learn about morality and hope. The case with Andor remains the same, the elements that raise the seriousness and tone are still “suitable for all audiences”. Closing the door to the little ones to a series like this would be to take them for fools. Andor has everything to be one of the great productions of Star Wars and Disney +with 9 chapters and one more season for all of us to enjoy.
