People: Betty White Souvenir Auction – ‘She Was Our Queen’

Almost nine months after the death of TV icon Betty White, more than 1,500 souvenirs from the “Golden Girls” star’s estate are being auctioned off in the United States. The worldwide interest is great.

An auction of souvenirs of the American television icon Betty White could bring in a million euros almost nine months after the death of the “Golden Girls” star.

One to two million dollars (about one to two million euros) could come together, estimated Martin Nolan, managing director of Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills. Nolan helped assemble the more than 1,500 estate items for this weekend’s three-day auction (September 23-25).

“She was our Queen. She stood in front of the cameras from the 1940s until the end of her life. Everyone loved and adored her and everyone mourned when she died 17 days before her 100th birthday,” Nolan told the German Press Agency. White became world famous with the sitcom “Golden Girls” (1985-1992). She played the naïve widow Rose Nylund in the series about four elderly women who share a flat.

An American icon, loved around the world

Online bids from all over the world were received in advance, Nolan said. “She’s an American icon, but she was loved around the world.” The auction includes screenplays, award trophies, wardrobe, jewelry and furnishings from White’s Brentwood and Carmel homes.

One of the highlights of the huge collection is the director’s chair from the “Golden Girls” set with the name “Betty”. The estimated value of $1,000 to $2,000 was far exceeded even before the auction weekend. Online bids were already over $17,500 on Thursday. Two scripts, autographed by “Golden Girls” actresses White, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty, received an upfront bid of $22,500, well above the $700 estimate.

The diamond-studded wedding ring that White wore after her third marriage to actor Allen Ludden in 1963 also received a bid for over $17,000; the estimate was significantly lower at up to $1,200. Her silver-gray 1999 Cadillac has an upfront bidder who would pay $12,500. A diamond-studded brooch that White wore frequently is estimated at up to $6,000.

Estate pieces priced at “affordable”.

Many of the estate pieces have been priced at an “affordable” price, Nolan said. But the enormous interest from fans, collectors, museums and investors would drive up the bids. Nolan also expects prominent colleagues to bid at the auction. For example, “Dallas” star Linda Gray looked at the memorabilia on display during a preview.

White was known as a nature lover and for her commitment to animal welfare. This is also shown by the many estate items with animal motifs in paintings, as jewelry and decoration. A highlight of the auction is a designer handbag in the shape of a labrador puppy, made of rhinestone beads with a gold-colored collar. Several bidders have let the price skyrocket to $3,500 in advance.

Fit, cheerful and curious into old age

White was “very nostalgic” and rarely parted with items in her Brentwood home for decades, Nolan says. One of the oldest items is a wristwatch that White received from her mother as a teenager. The gold watch engraved with the date December 25, 1940 has an estimate of $1,000 to $2,000.

With her characteristic white-haired grandmother looks and quick-witted humor, the star remained fit, cheerful and curious into old age. White, who has been married three times and has no children, is also a producer and has won dozens of awards, including numerous Emmys. At the age of 75 in the film and television business, she made it into the Guinness Book of Records – as the TV entertainer with the longest career. She died in Los Angeles on December 31, 2021, a good two weeks before her 100th birthday.
