At auctions in Monaco, Paris and Cologne, the numerous possessions of the fashion czar Karl Lagerfeld come under the hammer. These include Choupette’s cat bowl and his famous gloves.
He was one of the most ingenious fashion designers in history, was adored by many and was already a legend during his lifetime: Karl Lagerfeld. The creative head of the fashion house Chanel died in 2019. He left devastated fans, his beloved cat Choupette – and of course a large collection of fashion, accessories and luxury goods of all kinds. “The collection is as diverse and surprising as the fashion designer was”, announced the auction house Sotheby’s on Monday. Because large parts of the property are now being auctioned.
The Lagerfeld estate includes, for example, personal everyday items such as Choupette’s food bowls – the cat who has been by his side for the last eight years of his life. In contrast to such small objects, however, his three luxurious Rolls Royce and more than 200 pairs of his famous fingerless leather gloves will be auctioned at auctions in Monaco, Paris and Cologne in late 2021 and early 2022. The Rhenish metropolis may surprise you with this listing, but Sotheby’s recently even relocated its German headquarters to Cologne and plans to hold regular auctions there in the future.
Lagerfeld collected art, furniture and accessories
The auction house announces that Karl Lagerfeld was “an insatiable collector” who was interested in a wide variety of styles. He was enthusiastic about Italian furniture, French applied arts of the 18th century and Art Deco. He also collected art from the early 20th century with a special focus on objects from Germany in the 1920s, in particular the furniture by the architect and designer Bruno Paul and German advertising posters.
