At the age of thirty-one, Emmy-nominated trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has proven himself to be a rare talent: not just a fierce trumpeter with a soulful grasp of the post-bop trumpet vernacular—along the lines by Kenny Dorham and Freddie Hubbard – but also a singer with a shrewd, mature and naturally expressive Sinatra delivery, performing standards and his own songs, with a thrilling sense of showmanship. This very own ability was recognized by critics in Downbeat magazine (2022), in which he appeared not only as the second rising male star as a vocalist, but also as a trumpeter. His marvelous intonation and vigorous virtuosity allow him to tackle amazing self-composed vocal feats (complex solos with lyrics). Beyond these virtues, Benny is a pianist. Benny has performed internationally as emcee/host for YouTube’s Postmodern Jukebox, and achieved his own viral success by garnering millions of views for his participation in the Grammy-winning “8-Bit Big Band.”
In early 2020 he released A Lot of Livin’ to Do, the follow-up to his well-received debut album One of a Kind in 2017. This new record features bassist extraordinaire and jazz ambassador Christian McBride (whose award-winning Big Band a Grammy Award, frequently draws on Benny in the trumpet section) and drummer/producer Ulysses Owens, Jr., as well as Takeshi Ohbayashi on piano and Rhodes. The vocal duet of him together with the outstanding young singer Veronica Swift became an instant smash hit transcribed and learned by jazz vocalists all over the world.
In addition to his world tour as a contemporary bandleader, Benny has appeared as a solo trumpet artist in more commercial circles alongside Josh Groban, Ben Folds, fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, Ann Hampton Callaway and more. He has played Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Mezzrow, Bemelmans Bar in Carlyle, and other prominent New York venues. He has also been a special guest of the Pittsburgh Pops Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, and the Minsk Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his television debut on NBC’s SNL-inspired variety show “Maya & Marty,” playing in the studio band led by acclaimed Broadway bassist and arranger Charlie Rosen. His worldwide recognition has been bolstered by recent concerts broadcast live at Smalls Jazz Club, where he maintains a weekly residency, as well as his frequent appearances on fellow young lion Emmett’s weekly “Emmet’s Place” show. Cohen.
Third in a generational line of Pittsburgh jazz notables, Benny follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, trumpeter and bandleader, Benny Benack, Sr. (1921-1986), and his father, Benny Benack, Jr., saxophonist and clarinettist who gave young Benny her first professional experience. Benny, Sr. came from a Pittsburgh bloodline that also produced Roy Eldridge, Earl Hines, Art Blakey, Billy Strayhorn and many more. He recorded the theme song for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1960) and toured with Tommy Dorsey and Raymond Scott, among others. Benny III returns to Pittsburgh often to perform and salute his family ancestors as well as jazz heritage in general, however, he goes for his bold and highly individual artistic approach. He is an artist endorser of several musical instrument related brands as well as menswear lines including X-Suit, Alain Dupetit, Proper Cloth and Vittone.
