The Haag theater summer celebrates its 20th birthday with Nestroy’s posse “Der Zerrissene”. Director Dominic Oley has updated Nestroy’s text for the stage, taking risks. The risk in this case is that “Der Zerrissene” is not just a comedy, but also an abysmal character comedy. Herr von Lips, the title character, is rich, single, free – and unhappy. The material carelessness is denatured by the stale feeling of meaninglessness. Dominic Oley’s staging conveys this nihilistic core of Nestroy’s farce only selectively. He emphasizes grotesque elements, works with a lot of movement, slapstick, high speed, high pitched pitches. It’s entertaining, cheerful, consistent in itself. Nestroy gourmets will, however, miss linguistic and atmospheric nuances.
Artistic director Christian Dolezal gave his Herr von Lips a convincing profile between cynicism and emotional need (despite illness). Miriam Fussenegger as Kathi had a harder time finding a clear outline in this “today’s” production. They didn’t want to portray her as lovable and lovable innocence from the country, but the bold emancipatory aspect doesn’t really fit in with this female figure. Sigrid Hauser exuded calculating charm as Madame Schleyer, Kajetan Dick was a wonderfully annoyed Krautkopf. As an ember hammer, Tania Golden underlined the grotesque character of the production.
