A month ago, the Academy hosted a ceremony at its new Los Angeles museum to pay tribute to Littlefeather and publicly apologize for her treatment at the Oscars nearly 50 years ago.
Littlefeather, who was both Apache and Yaqui, was booed during the 1973 awards show, broadcast live around the world for the first time, explaining why Brando, whom she represented, turned down the best actor award for “The Godfather”due to “treatment of American Indians by the motion picture industry”.
Brando asked the actress to decline the award on his behalf as a gesture of protest.

During the recent tribute, the actress said that on that occasion she took the stage “as a proud indigenous woman, with dignity, courage, grace and humility.”
“I knew I had to tell the truth. Some people could accept it. Some people couldn’t,” he said.
He also said that then it was necessary to prevent the star of westerns John Wayne physically assaulted her as she left the stage.
Littlefeather, member of the Screen Actors’ Guild (the union of film professionals), had difficulty getting a job in Hollywood, as casting directors were pressured to leave her out of filming.
