Manzana organized a screening of the film together with the NAACP during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 51st Annual Legislative Conference, as Angela Rye moderated a discussion with Smith, Fuqua, and Mary Elliott, Curator of American Slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
“Throughout my career, I’ve turned down a lot of movies set in slavery,” Smith said at the screening, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I never wanted to show us like this. And then this movie came along. And this is not about slavery. This is a movie about freedom. This is a movie about resilience. This is a movie about faith. This is a movie about heart of a man, what could be called the first viral image. The cameras had just been created and the image of Peter whipped went around the world.”
Smith later called the photo a “rallying cry against slavery” and that it inspired a film that he says he wanted to be a part of “in a way that only Antoine Fuqua could deliver.” Fuqua has had an extensive career, from directing Training day until directing the video of the deceased coolie for “Gangsta’s Paradise”.

Quickly Twitter was full of laudatory comments towards the film and Smith’s performance, this thinking about the next awards season. The film will have a limited release in theaters in the United States on December 2 and on the 9th of the same month it will arrive on the Apple TV + streaming platform.
