Verdi’s villa has to be closed after a dispute over heirs

The current resident and director of the small, busy museum, Angiolo Carrara Verdi, a direct heir to the composer, has been forced to vacate the villa following a civil justice decision.

This marks the end of a 20-year legal battle between the composer’s heirs. On October 30, the museum has to be closed because the Supreme Court ruled that the inheritance of Alberto Carrara Verdi, who died in 2001 and heir to the composer, must be divided equally between his three children. However, since none of the three is able to take over the shares of the others, the villa has to be sold with the museum.

“I must leave the house that I have protected and preserved for 53 years,” said Angiolo Carrara Verdi. The court will appoint an administrator to look after the museum.

Urgent need for renovation

Giuseppe Verdi lived in the villa for 50 years, which contains numerous memories of the composer’s life and work. The roof of the museum is in urgent need of renovation. The facade also needs to be repainted and the six-hectare park needs maintenance work. Verdi composed some of his most beautiful operas in the house. This is where the maestro’s furniture and personal belongings are located, including a Fritz fortepiano from Vienna, on which he composed “Il Trovatore” and “La Traviata”.
