After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Andrew’s role in the royal family is more uncertain than ever. Ever since his connection to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein became public, Andrew has been hated. But his downward spiral began earlier.
Countless royal experts have had their say in recent years to describe Prince Andrew. He was considered the favorite child of the late Queen, and at a young age a womanizer. But in the end, most people probably only thought of his friendship with pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell when they mentioned the royal. The US documentary “Banished: Prince Andrew” has set itself the task of taking a closer look at Andrew’s life.

The makers spoke to some Royal experts, including former Buckingham Palace press secretary Dickie Arbiter. And he finds clear words about King Charles III’s brother: “I suppose there’s always a weakling in the litter, and Andrew is,” explains Arbiter in the documentary. Andrew is an “idiot,” Arbiter says in reference to the prince’s disastrous BBC interview in November 2019.
The documentary doesn’t necessarily reveal many new details about Andrew. It was already known that he had a teddy bear collection. According to Paul Page, a former Buckingham Palace employee, Andrew was extremely picky about it. It had specific instructions for staff on how to arrange the bears. Page also recalls that Andrew invited Ghislaine Maxwell on several occasions and was otherwise happily entertaining women.
“We wanted to hear as much as possible from Prince Andrew in the film, so we worked hard to find as many interview clips and moments where he speaks for himself,” director Jamie Crawford told Vanity Fair. One such clip shows a young Prince Andrew trying in all seriousness to explain that the royal palaces are by no means extravagant. The documentary also shows past coverage of Andrew. “The prince went to a novel restaurant where waitresses dressed in schoolgirl uniforms spanked the guests’ butts,” explains a host in a TV announcer with amusement.

In Andrews’ case, the past is almost more important than the present. “One often imagines that one finds the really fascinating things in contemporary history,” explains the director of the magazine. “Indeed is [Banished] in a way the reverse – it starts with contemporary history that everyone knows. But what’s really fascinating about this project is the life that preceded it.”
Before he caused a stir with scandals, Andrew was temporarily one of the more popular royals. As an ex-soldier, he was even celebrated in Great Britain. And yet, from the start, Andrew’s life was doomed to decline. “Most of us aspire to get a job, to get promoted someday, to make more money or to reach a higher position. But Prince Andrew has become less and less important in his life as a royal,” explains Crawford. “As a young man in his teens and twenties, he was second in line to the throne. If anything had happened to the Queen and Prince Charles, he would have become king, which is quite incredible and therefore very important personally. With the birth of children to Charles and then from William and Harry, he’s slipped down the royal pecking order over the decades,” he says.
But Prince Andrew’s lifestyle has always been that of an important royal. Extravagant parties, expensive trips – all of this was important to Queen Elizabeth II’s son. “You can’t understand the implications of a résumé designed for diminishing importance,” Royal expert Tina Brown explains in Banished. With Jeffrey Epstein, Prince Andrew had a friend at his side whose financial resources were almost endless. Ghislaine Maxwell, meanwhile, frequented similar social circles in Britain. And Prince Andrew had title and status as a royal.
What’s next for the disgraced Andrew? The documentary gives a clear assessment in this regard: Without the Queen, Andrew becomes even less important. “The ties are already broken,” explains Crawford. That King Charles III. the monarchy wants to streamline and modernize is already known. There could be no more room for Prince Andrew.
