“See to [Michael J. Fox] hugging Christopher Lloyd like this is so beautiful,” one Twitter user wrote. “I think it’s safe to say that today it belongs to Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. How should I do? It’s a beautiful moment in time.”
Fox joined Return to the future after production was already underway, with Lloyd filming scenes with the original Marty McFly actor, Eric Stoltz. Director Robert Zemeckis realized that Stoltz was not suitable for the past, so Fox was cast and the production had to reshoot the scenes.
“I didn’t know Michael other than hearing about him,” Lloyd said at NYCC. “And I felt like he was barely past six weeks, and now he was going to have to do it again? There was immediate chemistry, as they say.”
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the late 1990s and told the NYFCC audience that Lloyd has always been there for him over the years.
“Parkinson’s is the gift you keep taking, but it’s a gift and I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Fox said. “People like Chris have been there for me a lot, and a lot of you have. It’s not about what I have, it’s about what I’ve been given: the voice to do this and help people.”
