House of the Dragon: Emma D’Arcy did not see Game of Thrones before being Rhaenyra Targaryen

The British actress clarifies that at least they were aware of the program, but simply had not seen it. “I haven’t lived under a rock and it was very much in my peripheral consciousness,” says D’Arcy, who adds that the love of the show came later. “It came at the perfect time, actually, in the run-up to the final shoot”.

In House of the Dragon, D’Arcy plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne. To prepare for the role, D’Arcy read fire and blood of George R.R. Martinbut admits that he has not read all the books in the canon of game of Thrones.

“I read the book that relates to the work we’re doing, Fire and Blood. Mostly because it’s so exciting to read and get spoilers for your own story. I highly recommend it,” D’Arcy told the outlet.

Emma D’Arcy on her non-binary identity and the HBO opportunity

In the interview, D’Arcy discussed the scale of the show and the stamina needed to make it.

“This is the first job where I’ve brought my non-binary identity to work,” says D’Arcy. “And part of that was because HBO asked me what pronouns I use, and I thought a lot about whether this was the right time.”

D’Arcy says the decision was very important to them because early in their career they were concerned that it wasn’t possible to be a non-binary performer. “Usually within casting sites, there are two columns, and I was wondering if those two identities would have to live separately for me to have a career.”

D’Arcy continues, “The reason I decided to be honest in my presentation professionally is that I really hope that younger people who want to do this work know that there is absolutely room and that space is opening up.”
