Tom Cruise will be “the first civilian to spacewalk” outside the International Space Station (ISS) when he heads into space to shoot an action movie with director Doug Liman. Donna Langley, director of Universal Pictures, according to statements reproduced yesterday by Variety, anticipated the news during an interview with the BBC. Universal supports Cruise’s space project, whose budget would exceed 200 million dollars. Although it was already known that the film would shoot scenes on the ISS, Langley said that the plan is for Cruise to do a spacewalk as well.
“Tom Cruise is taking us into space. He is going to take the whole world to space. That’s the idea,” Langley confirmed to the BBC. “We have a project in development with him that contemplates him doing that. Take a rocket to the space station, shoot there, and hopefully become the first civilian to spacewalk outside the station.” Langley revealed that although the film will send Cruise into space, “most of it will actually take place on Earth; then his character has to go up into space for a rescue mission.” The Universal president described Cruise’s character as “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save the Earth.”
Liman and Cruise previously collaborated on films such as “Edge of Tomorrow” (2014) and “Barry Seal: Only in America” (2017). The rest of the plot details for the new film are being kept under wraps, though they are known to be working with both NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX company. No Hollywood studio has ever shot a feature film in space before. Cruise could earn between $30 million and $60 million, according to estimates. This would cover his services as a producer and star, and would also be comprised of a significant profit share.
