The Augsburg District Court has convicted a police officer for insulting the Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth.
An Augsburg police officer was sentenced to a fine of 4,400 euros on Wednesday for insulting Bundestag Vice President Claudia Roth (Greens). The official had compared the face of the Green politician with a horse’s rear on his publicly visible Facebook profile. “That goes too far,” decided judge Rita Greser.
Claudia Roth is not the only prominent victim of the convict
The 53-year-old police superintendent was charged with numerous other cases before the Augsburg district court. The prosecution had listed six cases of insult, incitement to hatred in 26 cases and the use of symbols of unconstitutional organizations in connection with a swastika depiction. In all other cases the officer was acquitted. The man has to pay 40 daily rates of 110 euros each, as the court announced on Thursday.
Suspended since 2019
His defense lawyer and the judge emphasized that a number of text and picture posts are tasteless, but not punishable by law. The officer, who has been suspended from the police service since 2019, published the posts that had been charged on Facebook against politicians, refugees and Muslims. Roth filed a complaint against the man himself.
The attorney had demanded a full acquittal and announced an appeal. Disciplinary proceedings are still ongoing against the convicted person and will only be continued after the criminal proceedings have been concluded.
In 2004 Claudia Roth, born in 1955, was chairwoman of the Greens. In the 1990s, Roth was a member of the European Parliament for many years, since 2002 she has been a member of the German Bundestag, and since October 22, 2013 its Vice-President.
