Violence against women: Poster campaign divides opinions

Because not all of the five subjects, which originate from the Viennese author and cartoonist Stefanie Sargnagel as well as from Aldo Giannotti and Katerina Seda, are advertised by the commissioned companies.

A drawing of a penis can be seen on a poster by Giannotti with the question “Does that justify your violence?” According to the initiators, not posting posters is argued with the protection of children. Sargnagel showed little understanding for this, “because then one would have to ban such motifs from children’s books as well”.

Also Sargnagel’s works, on which “In the fairy tale the prince kills the dragon. In Tyrol his ex.” and “Everybody kills their wives, nobody kills their boss.” is to be read are denied. The first because of “discrimination against Tyroleans”, the second because of “calls for violence against bosses”, she wrote on her Instagram channel. The Verkehrsverbund Tirol only shows two posters in public transport, all five can only be seen in the customer center.

Intended polarization

It was also intended that the motifs should irritate and polarize, explained initiator Veronika Burtscher. Art is intended to initiate a discussion about the increasing number of femicides and structural violence. The works were created in cooperation with the platform Lungomare Bozen and the women’s center Osttirol, Mannsbilder Tirol and “Women against Violence” and were selected together.
