Stiko has changed its recommendation for Astrazeneca first vaccinated people. And this should now be implemented quickly. Jens Spahn believes that there is enough mRNA vaccine available for cross-vaccination.
Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn has promised sufficient vaccine for the implementation of the surprisingly changed Astrazeneca recommendation of the Standing Vaccination Commission.
“It will be possible to implement the recommendation very quickly because there is sufficient mRNA vaccine,” said the CDU politician after consulting with his country colleagues in Berlin.
The vaccination commission had surprisingly announced the day before that people who had received a first dose of the corona vaccine from Astrazeneca should in future receive an mRNA vaccine like that from Biontech or Moderna as a second syringe, regardless of age.
“Such a recommendation can of course easily unsettle many who want to be vaccinated at first,” admitted Spahn. He and the health ministers of the federal states were surprised by the decision. In the case of the head of the vaccination commission, Thomas Mertens, who was involved in the ministerial consultations, the politicians had therefore advocated “that we should improve communication between science and politics with each other”.
In the coming week alone, 500,000 to 700,000 people will be affected who are actually due for a second vaccination with Astrazeneca.
Spahn emphasized the particularly high effectiveness of cross-vaccination with the vaccine from Astrazeneca for the first and that from Biontech / Pfizer or Moderna for the second. In addition, the new recommendation includes an interval between the second and the first vaccination of just four weeks. So you shouldn’t wait up to twelve weeks, as was previously recommended at Astrazeneca.
“This combination is one of the best available vaccine combinations that are currently available,” said Spahn. This makes Astrazeneca’s vaccine more attractive. There are currently many Astrazeneca cans in stock in Germany. In the coming days alone, 2.4 million cans would be delivered.
