Robbie Coltrane, the actor who played Hagrid in Harry Potter, has died

of original name Robert McMillanduring the 1970s he decided to pursue his career as an actor under the artistic nickname of Robbie Coltrane, in honor of the saxophonist John Coltraneof whom he considered himself an admirer.

For some years the actor suffered from osteoarthritis, a disease that affects and degrades the cartilage of the joints, forcing him to move in a wheelchair.

One of his last public appearances had been in the special that hbo max launched last January in honor of 20 years since the beginning of the magical saga.

There, reviewing the legacy of his role in the boy wizard story, Coltrane had said: “The legacy of the Harry Potter films is that my children’s generation will pass them on to theirs. So they could see them for 50 years easily. Sadly, I won’t be there, but Hagrid will.”
