Sexism: Alyssa Milano recalls #MeToo tweet five years ago

Five years of #MeToo: A single tweet from actress Alyssa Milano started an international movement against sexual abuse.

US actress Alyssa Milano (49, “Charmed”), who introduced the keyword #MeToo in the debate about everyday sexism and abuse, recalled her tweet that went viral five years ago.

She posted the original October 15, 2017 tweet on her social media using the hashtag #MeToo. At the time, the actress tweeted, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted, reply to this tweet with ‘me too’.”

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world spoke up under this slogan. Milano picked up the term from the activist Tarana Burke and triggered an avalanche of reactions on the internet – an international movement was born.

Her tweet followed the first newspaper reports with allegations by numerous women about sexual assault by film producer Harvey Weinstein. The producer was sentenced in New York in 2020 to 23 years in prison for rape, among other things. He is currently on trial in another sexual assault trial in Los Angeles.
