Actor Gérard Depardieu cast his vote in the Duma election. Who did the Russian elect?
Gérard Depardieu (72) has been a Russian citizen since 2013. As such, he is of course entitled to a vote in the elections there. The character mime, who was born in Châteauroux, has now been photographed casting his vote in the Russian embassy in Paris for the Duma election (September 17-19), which is currently being counted.
In 2018, Depardieu had already cast his vote in the Russian presidential election. The Duma is the second chamber of parliament, elected directly by the people every five years. According to the first projections, the Vladimir Putin party United Russia will come as no surprise with over 46 percent and a clear gap to the strongest force. Numerous election observers claim to have witnessed massive manipulation over the weekend. Pre-filled votes or votes cast several times were reported.
Tax evasion in the Democracy Street
Depardieu became a Russian citizen by Putin’s presidential decree in 2013. The actor had previously criticized – in his opinion – too high a tax on the rich in France. He then moved his residence to Belgium. However, in order to be able to cede his French citizenship as announced, he first had to accept another one. The Russian offered him personally according to Putin – and Depardieu accepted gratefully in January 2013.
Since then, the Russian city of Saransk has been the star’s official residence. His address: Die Demokratie-Strasse 1.
