The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) now also make fashion. To launch its new seat pattern, BVG, together with an online retailer, presented a whole collection in the style of buses and trains.
The old worm pattern of Berlin subway seats has divided opinion for years. Some found it abysmal ugly, others called it a cult. The new spotty, colorful design will perhaps polarize in a similar way. On Wednesday, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) and the online fashion retailer Zalando launched a fashion collection with the new pattern.

The BVG wants to set an example for diversity: fans can show their colors with sweaters, shirts and jackets. The collection is available on the Zalando website and in a pop-up store on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz next to the customer center.
The new pattern is a colorful sea of human outlines and is therefore similarly delicate to the so-called little worm pattern from the 1980s. The company already emphasized the diversity during the introduction: “Our passengers are as colorful and diverse as the BVG and Berlin itself,” explained Marketing Manager Christine Wolburg.
The BVG is no longer allowed to use the old pattern since it lost a legal dispute with the designer in the winter. She is also no longer allowed to sell fan articles in the pattern – the designer has the right to release it.
A new seat pattern is to be introduced in buses and trains from next year
According to the BVG, the first two double-decker buses were fitted with the new “pattern of variety” in July. In the coming years, it will gradually be installed in all BVG vehicles.
From 2023, the new pattern will be used whenever old covers have to be replaced. In the vehicles, however, the worms were already gradually being phased out. The seats of new vehicles recently received the grey-black “Night Lines” design.
