The brutal Netflix series “Dahmer” about the US serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer caused disturbing nights even for thriller author Sebastian Fitzek. “I confess that I often turned it off, thought about it and didn’t look through it in one go. I asked myself why I was so interested in the topic and sometimes also annoyed me,” said Fitzek (51, “The Package”) of the German press Agency.
The focus of “Dahmer – Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer” was too much on the perpetrator, which can also be seen in the series title. “In fiction and in reality, it always bothers me that the names of the perpetrators are present, but the victims are forgotten. I can’t understand the hype surrounding Jeffrey Dahmer, but I can understand the interest in his person.”
The ten-part thriller series, which is one of the most successful Netflix productions ever, sheds light on the murders of at least 17 young men by Dahmer before his arrest in 1991.
The American dismembered and partially ate his victims after the crime. “My thesis that reality is harder than what we thriller writers can imagine at home is more than proven by this series. It’s actually so frightening because it’s real,” Fitzek continued.
