Last summer, news of the sudden death of snowboarder Alex Pullin shocked the sports world. Now his name is making headlines again – and they couldn’t be more different.
Australian snowboard star Alex Pullin died a year ago in a tragic accident while spear fishing near Palm Beach, Queensland. His girlfriend Ellidy Vlug announced on Instagram that she was pregnant – by Pullin.
“Bubba Chump is coming this October. Your dad and I dreamed of you for years, little one,” writes Vlug on Instagram. After the death of the two-time world champion, doctors removed living sperm from his body and artificially fertilized Vlug.
“The bittersweetest thing in the world”
“I can’t even believe I’m telling this story,” she writes. “It’s the bittersweetest thing in the world and it’s a complete emotional roller coaster ride, but that’s my greatest gift”
Alex Pullin and his girlfriend were trying to have a child
When Pullin died, Vlug clung to the hope of being pregnant – and was disappointed. The couple had been trying to become parents for some time. They would have thought of artificial insemination back then, but Vlug could never have imagined that she would have to go through it on her own. Nevertheless, the joy of pregnancy seems to outweigh the above: “In my life I have never been so sure and so excited”.
She has already posted some pictures of her baby bump on Instagram. “I am honored to be part of this miracle that Chumpy is bringing back to this world,” she writes underneath. “Chumpy” was Alex Pullin’s nickname.
Incidentally, in Germany it is not possible to become a father posthumously in this way. The Embryo Protection Act justifies this by stating that the best interests of the child would be at risk in such a case.
