Cameron continued: “When I look at these big, spectacular movies, I look at you, Marvel and DC, it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college.. They have relationships, but they don’t really have them. They never hang up their spurs because of their children. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and purpose? Those characters don’t experience it and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”
Another way not to make movies is to do underwater scenes. Cameron filmed most of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in large tanks of water, and its cast had to train to hold their breath for minutes so that Cameron could film longer takes underwater. When asked what is gained by filming in real water compared to the more CGI approach taken in movies like “Aquaman” and the next Disney movie “The little Mermaid”, Cameron responded, “Oh I don’t know, maybe it looks good? ”
“Come on! You want to make it look like people are underwater, so they must be underwater.”Cameron told The Times. “It’s not a giant leap: if you were doing a western, you’d be learning to ride a horse. I knew Sam was a surfer, but Sigourney and Zoe and the others weren’t particularly ocean-oriented people. So I was very specific about what it would take, and we hired the best freediving specialists in the world to talk about it.”
