They attacked a work by Vermeer to denounce climate change

The T-shirts of the environmentalists who entered the Mauritshuis gallery read “Just stop oil”, the same UK environmental group that is behind most of the attacks of this nature recorded in other museums.

“The girl of the pearl” It is one of the best known paintings in the history of art. Since it remains unknown who the model was, the portrait has a certain enigmatic power of attraction. It is a small painting of 44 centimeters by 39, in which you can see how the girl turns towards the viewer from a dark background. This work, along with another thirty on loan from international museums, is being prepared for the largest retrospective dedicated to Vermeer in the history of another Dutch museum, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, scheduled for February 10, 2023.

After the attack, the museum explained in a statement that “two people stuck” to the painting and “a third threw an unknown substance” on the work. They also reported that the canvas was not damaged and will be exposed again as soon as possible, while “firmly” condemning the attack.

The Hague police, meanwhile, reported from their Twitter account that they had arrested three people in a museum for “public violence against property.”
