The question “What is actually doing …?” does not arise with Bruce Springsteen. Rather: What is the man not actually doing at the age of 72? Albums, performances, podcasts – and a lot more.
The «Boss» returned to the site of one of his greatest artistic triumphs in the summer. In 2017/18 Bruce Springsteen played, sang and told 236 times in the heart of New York about his life, his family, his friends and his great love for music.
The always sold-out stage self-portrait of the US stadium rock icon in the Walter Kerr Theater is said to have achieved the equivalent of a good 95 million euros in sales. From the end of June to the beginning of September, the Tony Award-winning show “Springsteen on Broadway” had a second edition.
It marked the restart of the famous New York theater district after the Corona-Aus – and can also serve as proof of the tireless liveliness of the passionate US musician. The 20-time Grammy winner from the neighboring state of New Jersey looks back on his life, based on his autobiography “Born To Run” (2016). The proceeds from the theater performances go to charitable organizations.
The return to New York with “Springsteen on Broadway” joins numerous activities of the most popular living US rock musician after his 70th birthday in September 2019. Since then, the singer-songwriter, affectionately known by millions of fans, has been doing “The Boss” impressive workload. “It gives me something to do this summer so I don’t lie lazy on the beach,” Springsteen said of his Broadway comeback.
So no trace of retirement or flagging creativity. It wasn’t until mid-June that Springsteen published an elaborate video that presented him alongside the US stadium band The Killers. The collaboration with Brandon Flowers, who is a good 30 years younger than him, in his song “Dustland” shows the author’s great musical influence on rock classics such as “Born To Run”, “Badlands” or “Born In The USA”.
The 71-year-old recently demonstrated his eloquence with a series of radio programs (“E Street Radio” on SiriusXM) and in a podcast with Barack Obama (“Renegades: Born in the USA”). From the former head of the White House (2009-2017) the respectful saying “I am the president, he is the boss” has been handed down – both men have been friends for a long time. The eight-part Spotify format therefore started in February with the episode “Our improbable friendship” and ended in April with mutual anticipation for “America’s renewal” after the gloomy Trump years.
And then there is the E Street Band, with whom Springsteen has celebrated some of its greatest successes since the mid-1970s. The vigorous joint number one album “Letter To You” from last October is to be presented on a tour. According to Springsteen’s website, there are no specific dates yet. There may also be a new album.
