The 49-year-old first wants to see the good in her counterpart, not the bad. Praise is always more productive than criticism, she says.
Actress Anna Thalbach (49) says she is bored when people only look for the negative in others. Everyone, in her opinion, should strive to emphasize the merits of another. “This is a moral concern for me,” Thalbach told the German Press Agency. “I also want to be surrounded by people who bring out my beautiful sides and not tease out my ugly sides.”
Thalbach also wants to do the same with her characters. For the comedy on Kurfürstendamm she is currently dealing with the French Queen Marie Antoinette. The premiere is this Sunday (October 30). “First of all, I want to discover the nice, the beautiful, the strong in people. It bores me to focus on weaknesses,” said Thalbach.
Tip: Be stingy with criticism
In the public discussion about politicians, for example, things often go differently? “Yes, but in my world I think that’s the wrong approach. A destructive rather than a constructive approach.” Praise is always more productive than criticism. When asked if there were situations in everyday life where she often refrained from criticism, she said: “I have to practice it fully, I’m mega-critical.”
Should one judge politicians more cautiously at the moment, a little more sympathetically? “It’s a very complex issue,” said Thalbach. “The difficult thing about talking about politics is that we can only judge a small part. And that’s why the evaluation remains with a regulars’ table opinion. And a regulars’ table opinion – “I belong to the red team, I belong to the blue team” – is not either constructive. You should be stingy with criticism.” In these times it is more interesting not to ask: “How do I rate a politician? Do I throw eggs or flowers at him?”, but: “What can I do? How can I get involved?”
