Jerry Lee Lewis, one of the pioneers of rock, has died

Lewis, whose hits include “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lot of Shakin’ Going On,” previously suffered a stroke in 2019 but has been working on his recovery and in 2020 announced plans to record an album of gospel covers with producer T-Bone Burnett.

Lewis was also the subject of a documentary released by A24 earlier this year, Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind. The film was directed by Ethan Coen.

A pioneering pianist and singer, Lewis is the last surviving member of Sun Records’ Million Dollar Quartet recording sessions, which also included Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley Y Carl Perkins.

He was induced to Country Music Hall of Fame earlier this month, but did not attend on the advice of his doctors. Instead, Hank Williams Jr. Y Kris Kristofferson they accepted and celebrated the honor on behalf of Lewis.

That long-awaited induction came 36 years after his entry as part of the inaugural class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famein which Lewis joined that first class with Elvis, chuck berry, Little Richard Y James Brown.

Lewis’s career ultimately boasts a dozen gold records, four Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement honor, and two Grammy Hall of Fame Awards.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Judith Coghlan Lewis; his children Jerry Lee Lewis III, Ronnie Lewis, Phoebe Lewis and Lori Lancaster; sister Linda Gail Lewis; cousin Jimmy Swaggart; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
