The same fate awaits the first series of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. To the surprise of fans who expected a faster dispatch than Game of Thrones, because this series only produces eight episodes per seasonthe showrunners clarified that they hope to work on the next season “for another couple of years”.

These are not the only series of the moment that will have a space of more than a year between seasons. The critically acclaimed current Star Wars series, “Andor”will have a second and final season in which its creator, Tony Gilroy (known from the Bourne saga) will begin to shoot in November, until Augustand with About a year of post-production.

Following the growth of these epic series with big budgets, the time between seasons is increasing more and more and today it is around 16 to 24 months per batch of episodes. Normally these productions go through a few 10 months of filming and another 10 to complete the editing and special effects.

Although series like The Sopranos or Westworld had already had gaps of two years between seasonswhich seems to have caused the big change was the last installment of Game of Thrones in 2019. Until the seventh seasonthe first visit to Westeros came out with a new season every yearbut the advance of the production for the end caused the time extension which is now repeated in all these great productions.

Some even go further, like Stranger Things that could take three years to deliver its fifth and final season. While there was a year between the first and second installments and two between this and the third, they were three years that it took to make the fourth seasonwith the Covid-19 in between. The fifth installment will begin filming in 2023 and may not arrive before 2025.

“As series get bigger and more complicated, tWe have to follow the directives of the producers and let go of that ‘it would be nice to have them every year’. They have to do the best series they can. With big series like Westworld or Game of Thrones, sometimes you want the big, massive show, and that takes longer,” Bloys explained to The Hollywood Reporter.
