Comeback: Hamburg fish market reopens

It is a cherished tradition among early risers and people who have slept through the night on St.Pauli. After a long break, the Hamburg fish market reopens.

The Hamburg fish market reopened for the first time on Sunday morning after a long Corona break. From 5 a.m. on, night owls and early risers were able to visit the popular Hamburg attraction for the first time in more than 15 months.

The fish market in Altona is running in test operation with Corona requirements. Barkers and musicians are not yet allowed. Visitors must wear a medical mask and are only allowed to eat outside the premises. At a length of 250 meters and a width of 30 meters, only around 60 retailers are currently allowed to offer their goods in two rows. Usually around 120 market stalls are set up there.

The 300-year-old Hamburg fish market is open as usual from early morning until 9.30 a.m. The market traders did not want to get involved in later opening times because this would not preserve the market’s image. Before Corona, up to 70,000 people were out on the fish market on Sundays.
