James Cameron’s criticism of Marvel and DC movies

The press tour of Avatar: The Way of Water of james cameron It officially started with an interview in The New York Times. The long-awaited sequel to Avatar takes place 15 years after the original, so it was important to Cameron to portray a new sense of maturity in his leads Jake Sully (Worthington) and Neytiri (Saldaña). Such maturity is missing from the characters that populate Marvel and DC movies, according to Cameron.

“Zoe and Sam are now parents, 15 years later,” Cameron said. “In the first movie, Sam’s character jumps out of his flying creature and essentially changes the course of history as a result of this crazy, near-suicidal leap of faith. And Zoe’s character jumps off a branch and assumes there’s going to be some nice big leaves down there that can break her fall. But when you’re a parent, you don’t think that way. So for me, as a father of five children, I say, ‘What happens when those characters mature and realize they have a responsibility beyond their own survival?'”

Cameron continued: “When I look at these big, spectacular movies, I look at you, Marvel and DC, it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college.. They have relationships, but they don’t really have them. They never hang up their spurs because of their children. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and purpose? Those characters don’t experience it and I think that’s not the way to make movies.”
