James Corden recently attracted negative attention with his diva behavior in a New York restaurant. Now the moderator is criticized again: he took a joke from comedian Ricky Gervais.
James Corden has just had to answer for his airs in a New York restaurant, and he’s already being criticized again.
James Corden tells joke by Ricky Gervais
On the Halloween edition of his “Late Late Show,” Corden shared a joke some people may already know. Because it was in the original by Ricky Gervais.
He told it in the context of the Twitter takeover of Elon Musk and people’s general desire to get upset about things. “If someone puts up a poster in a town square that says ‘guitar lessons available,’ then the people of the city are not going to say, ‘I don’t want to play guitar! I want to play piano, you piece of shit!'” he said then got to the point: “Well, the sign wasn’t for you. It was for someone else! You don’t have to get upset about all that.”
The viewers quickly noticed: Gervais had told exactly the same joke in his stand-up program in 2018. Gervais was addressing the people who are angry about his tweets.
Gervais reacts
Gervais himself responded to Corden’s performance by sharing a clip of it on Twitter, writing, “The spot advertising guitar lessons in the marketplace is brilliant.” A little later he deleted his post and explained that Corden certainly didn’t steal the joke on purpose. “I doubt he would knowingly copy such a famous stand-up routine word for word,” said the Briton.
And indeed, Corden explained himself a little later. “I accidentally told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night not knowing it was his,” he wrote on Twitter. “He’s brilliant because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all of Ricky’s excellent specials on Netflix,” he added.
It remains to be hoped for James Corden that the moderator will not have to apologize again any time soon.
