Selena Gomez reveals in a new interview that she’s struggling with the prospect of not having children of her own.
A new interview and her just released documentary show private insights into the life – and suffering – of Selena Gomez (30).
The singer and actress told the that she probably won’t be able to have children because of the medication for her bipolar disorder. After visiting a friend, she cried in her car after realizing that she would probably never be able to carry babies herself, Gomez says in it. Gomez says it’s a “very big, huge” thing in her life right now. However, she hopes to be able to become a mother in a different way in the coming years: “However I should have her, I will have her.”
In the interview, Gomez also talks about the mental health issues that have plagued her for years. Already in her early twenties she had been so severely depressed that she would not get up for weeks. She also spoke about suicide: “I just thought that the world would be better without me.” In 2018 she went through a psychotic phase where she started hearing voices. Gomez describes her friends as not recognizing her at that time. After experiencing paranoid ideas and having trouble trusting others, she sought treatment for several months. Gomez says she’s been to four treatment centers for her mental health issues.
The Disney trauma
In the Apple TV+ documentary “My Mind & Me” the artist gives further insights into her private life. One scene shows, for example, how Gomez gets an interview marathon in 2020 too much. After a journalist didn’t respond to her answers, Gomez shed tears. “I’m done, I can’t do this anymore… do you know how cheap I feel about it?” she tells her team afterwards. And finally explains why the situation triggered her like this: “It felt like Disney,” said the former child star. “I’ve spent years not feeling like this ever again.”
Gomez had her first role at the age of ten, at 15 she played the female lead in the Disney series “Wizards of Waverly Place”. As early as 2021, she explained in an interview that she had practically given her life to Disney with her signature.
The new documentary, which is available today, Friday, also follows Selena’s struggles with other mental illnesses, including anxiety disorders, panic attacks and bipolar disorder, which she was diagnosed with in 2020. Her lupus disease and kidney transplant are also an issue. But the film also sheds light on how the singer eventually learned to heal and love herself.
Documentary almost unpublished
Gomez said in an interview with Rolling Stone that she was nervous about the publication of this very “raw material” about her life. “I don’t want it to sound dramatic, but I almost didn’t bring it out,” Gomez said. “A few weeks ago I wasn’t sure if I could do it.”
