Poland: Tusk returns to the political stage

The 64-year-old took over the leadership of the largest opposition party again.

The party congress of the liberal-conservative “Citizens’ Platform” elected Tusk as vice-party leader on Saturday in Warsaw, who also takes on the role of chairman on a temporary basis. The previous party leader of the Civic Platform (PO), Borys Budka, had previously resigned to pave the way for Tusk’s return.

In order for Tusk to become a regular party leader, he still has to be confirmed by party members through an election. The date for this has not yet been set. The election as vice-chairman was unanimous.

The national conservative PiS also held a party conference on Saturday. According to the party, 1245 delegates voted for 72-year-old Jaroslaw Kaczynski, 18 against him, and five abstained. There were no opposing candidates.
