“I think it’s understandable that people feel emotional due to recent events”says Staunton, an Oscar nominee for Vera Drake 2004, whose many other credits include playing Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter. “There’s no question about it. We finished filming this season six months ago. If this had come out two years ago, all this wouldn’t be happening. So I think there’s sensitivity and there’s not much we can do about it. I think one would like to feel like people would recognize throughout all the seasons that Peter Morgan has written, the amount of respect he has for this family and the amount of integrity he uses to write these, yes, imagined scenes that revolve around fact I don’t think there’s much we can do or say.”
Staunton says she was delighted but intimidated when she was offered to play Queen Elizabeth II, who was previously played on the show by Claire Foy Y Olivia Colemanwho won Emmy Awards for their performances.
“I think we’d all seen The Crown and joining something of such high quality was quite wonderful, but then quite disheartening, thinking, well, we have to keep the standards high,” he said.
