The psychologist and relationship expert Christian Hemschemeier reveals which sentences should make you sit up and take notice on a first date, how you manage to draw a line and how you finally find the right partner.
Mr. Hemschemeier, I read that you have been in a toxic relationship yourself.
Yes, even two or three times in my life. Once when I was a student and then again later.
How did you realize the relationship was toxic?
I got worse and worse. And I just felt that the relationship was no longer good for me. At the same time, it was incredibly difficult to break away from the person.
Was there a key moment when you knew you had to change something?
No, it started slowly. I couldn’t sleep well anymore, often lay awake at night and thought a lot about the relationship. It was getting harder and harder for me to work. At some point it became clear that things couldn’t go on like this.
