Francis has symptomatic diverticulum stenosis of the intestine (protuberances in the intestinal wall that can become inflamed), said Matteo Bruni, Vatican spokesman. For his stay in the Gemelli Clinic, the Holy Father was accommodated on the tenth floor of the hospital, in the same rooms where Pope John Paul II had been lodged in the past.
The Pope’s hospital stay was surprisingly extended yesterday. In the afternoon, Vatican officials assumed that Pope Francis would only have to spend one night in the clinic. In the evening it was said from the hospital that the Pope would stay in the clinic for “at least five days”.
Immediately before his arrival, the 84-year-old Pope announced during the Angelus prayer that he would be traveling to Slovakia from September 12th to 15th. The day before his departure he will celebrate the closing mass of the International Eucharistic Congress in the Hungarian capital Budapest, said the pontiff.
The divine service with the Pope concludes the multi-day Eucharistic World Congress in Budapest.
