For his part, Hammond posted: “It is with great sadness that I inform you that my friend and legendary guitarist for Public Image Limited, Keith Levene, passed away this Friday, November 11. There is no doubt that Keith was one of the most innovative, bold and influential guitarists of all time. We send our condolences and love to his partner Kate, sister Jill and all their family and friends. The world is a darker place without your mind. Mine is going to be without my friend.”

Julian Keith Levene was born in London in 1957. and began his career in music at 15, as part of the team of the band Yes during one of their tours. The next year, he became friends with Mick Jones and together they created the band The Clash with Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon and Terry Chimes, in 1976.

Levene left the band before they recorded his first records. Even so, the single What’s My Name from the 1977 debut album bears his name as co-composer.

In 1978, Levene teamed up with Johnny Rotten, the lead singer of the Sex Pistols, and they formed the band Public Image Ltd. That same year they released their first album along with Jah Wobble and Jim Walker.
