Leon Goretzka: DFB star defends Germany’s participation in the World Cup

Shortly before the start of the World Cup, footballer Leon Goretzka commented on the tournament in Qatar. Why he doesn’t think a boycott makes sense.

On November 20th, the World Cup kicks off in Qatar. Even before the first game kicks off, the tournament is causing plenty of discussion. The host country, which has been criticized for human rights violations, is the main topic of conversation. FIFA is also in the crossfire of criticism because it made it possible for the World Cup to take place there. Nevertheless, the DFB team decided to take part in the World Cup. National player Leon Goretzka (27) thinks that is correct.

In his opinion, a boycott would be counterproductive: “Free-democratic countries are withdrawing and leaving the stage to other nations who may have deficits in respecting human rights. Is that what we want?” the midfielder asked himself in an interview with the magazine ” Star”. It is therefore all the more important to go to Qatar and “stand up for our values”.

Leon Goretzka on life in Germany: “A privilege”

Goretzka sees it as a privilege to live in a country that respects minorities and where freedom of expression prevails. He emphasizes that the DFB team also stands for these values: “We as a team support the diversity of lifestyles and oppose discrimination and racism.” The national team does that everywhere they play – “of course also at the World Cup”.

The World Cup takes place from November 20th to December 18th. In the first game, Germany will face Japan on November 23rd. On November 27th, the DFB-Elf will duel with Spain. Costa Rica awaits in the final game of Group E.
