Cristina Portela lets the wind blow at will

This blue is sometimes tinted by infinitesimal organisms that float in space, stars, points of light, molecules or life beyond the earth. Kant said that “in order to find the sight of the ocean sublime, we do not represent it to ourselves as a spirit enriched with all kinds of knowledge (which does not give immediate intuition) conceives it, for example, as a vast kingdom populated by aquatic beings or as a great reservoir destined to supply the vapors that load the air from the clouds for the benefit of the earth, it is necessary to represent it as the poets do, according to what the sight shows us”.

It is probable that this artist’s studies in philosophy and history of art have led her to the path that “the more we know, the less we feel”. Portela’s attitude towards painting is one of astonishment at what seems unrepresentable.

In “The Abuse of Beauty”, Arthur Danto quotes Nabokov when he says that “he cannot avoid talking about something beautiful as an object of consciousness, for example, a sunny landscape seen through a window frame. Portela overturns her inner world in her exhibited works, which does not mean that the exterior does not worry her. On the contrary, she seeks refuge in doing, the result of which is an object, but not as an object in itself, since art is inseparable from the rest of life. Portela paints and he does it to recover the illusion of an image that does not leave the viewer indifferent.

Curated by Elizabeth Cabeza, this exhibition is on display until the end of November at Arenales 1556, in a space in a historic building refurbished by the Hampton-Rivoira architects studio. (To visit the exhibition you must contact from Monday to Friday, with [email protected] and [email protected]).
