It is Biden’s first setback in the fight against the corona pandemic. Before that, he had undercut his own announcements twice: During the election campaign, he initially promised to have 100 million vaccine doses injected in his first 100 days in office, it lasted 60 days. So Biden raised the bar by announcing the vaccination of 200 million doses in 100 days – it only took 90 days. But now a plateau has been reached, from which there is hardly any more progress, said the government’s corona coordinator, Jeff Zients on CNN.
Almost 60 percent vaccinated twice
Despite numerous incentives and a large supply of vaccines, 67 percent, or 173 million people, have been vaccinated at least once so far, according to the CDC, a good 58 percent of all adults are fully protected. On average, around one million doses are introduced into the population every day – significantly less than the more than three million people at the height of the vaccination campaign in spring.
Joe Biden used the celebration of Independence Day to highlight the successes in the fight against the corona pandemic. “We have gained the upper hand,” he said at a reception in the garden of the White House, saying that the country can look to the future with confidence, even if the corona virus has not yet been defeated. “Last year we lived through some of our darkest days. Especially in more rural states, in which the vaccination rate is sometimes well below the national average, the number of new infections has recently risen again. Surveys suggest, however, that the vaccination campaign is now likely to progress more and more slowly because around 20 percent of the country’s residents reject the vaccinations. A negative attitude is widespread, especially among Republicans.
Germany caught up with the USA for vaccinations
Health officials are cautioning that hospitals are filling up in some areas, most notably in the states of Utah, Missouri, Arkansas, and Wyoming. The US virologist Anthony Fauci told NBC that unvaccinated people now accounted for 99.2 percent of corona deaths. In the USA, the vaccines from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna are mainly used. The government has also started distributing millions of doses to other countries.
Although the American vaccination campaign started relatively quickly, Germany has now caught up with the United States in terms of first vaccinations, but the United States is clearly ahead in terms of second vaccinations. More than three billion syringes with vaccines against the coronavirus have been administered worldwide. China leads the list of countries with around 40 percent (1.2 billion cans), followed by India (329 million), the EU (357 million) and the USA (324 million) a long way behind. Overall, the global vaccination campaign is still characterized by strong inequality. Countries with low average incomes sometimes only administer a single dose per 100 inhabitants. Five countries do not yet have a vaccination program: Tanzania, Burundi, Eritrea, Haiti and North Korea.
