“It’s horrendous, a bunch of nonsense”Bonham Carter told The Times. “I think she has been harassed. She has taken herself to the extreme, the judgment of the people. Her opinion is allowed, especially if she has been abused. Everyone carries their own story of trauma and forms their opinions from that trauma and you have to respect where people come from and their pain.”
“Not everyone has to agree on everything, that would be crazy and boring. He doesn’t say it aggressively, he just says something from his own experience.
Bonham Carter also referred to Depp’s recent defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, claiming that the court’s verdict, which found in Depp’s favour, had “fully vindicated” him. Depp and Bonham Carter have collaborated on multiple films and he is the godfather of his two children with his ex-partner. Tim Burton.
Asked if the defamation case was the “#MeToo pendulum swinging back,” Bonham Carter replied: “My opinion is that [Heard] got on that pendulum. That’s the problem with these things: people jumping on the bandwagon because it’s the trend and being the poster girl.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Bonham Carter criticized the idea that someone’s personal life should affect their career. “Do you forbid a genius from his sexual practices? There would be millions of people who if you looked closely enough at their personal lives you would write them off,” she added.
“You can’t ban people. I hate cancel culture. It’s gotten quite hysterical and there’s a kind of witch hunt and lack of understanding.”.
