Britney Spears was under her father’s tutelage for 13 years. In her fight against it, the singer was supported by fans and celebrities. Now the court is also on the side of the pop star: Jamie Spears is deposed as guardian.
The US pop singer Britney Spears has achieved an important legal success in the guardianship dispute with her father. A Los Angeles court removed her father Jamie as guardian with immediate effect. Judge Brenda Penny justified the decision that this was “in the best interests” of the singer. Accountant John Zabel initially acts as temporary guardian of Spears’ finances.
Penny described the previous guardianship regulation in the Spears case as “untenable”. Jamie Spears would have to surrender “all assets” in connection with his role as guardian of his daughter.
Guardianship regulation remains in place
Previously, the pop singer’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, had campaigned for his client’s right to self-determination in an emotional plea. Jamie Spears is a “cruel, toxic and abusive man,” said Rosengart. “Britney deserves to wake up in the morning without her father being her guardian. This is what my client wants, what my client needs, and what my client deserves.”
The guardianship regulation itself remains in place for the time being. Spears’ attorneys moved to see another trial in 45 days at the latest to see if all conditions are waived. According to the judge’s ruling, temporary guardian Zabel could remain in this role until the end of the year.
Spears’ fiancé Sam Asghari hailed the court decision on Instagram. “Free Britney!” Wrote Asghari. He also published a photo that apparently shows him handing the 39-year-old singer a rose.
“Free Britney” is a slogan used by many supporters of the singer in the legal guardianship dispute over Britney Spears. Also before the court hearing, dozens of fans of the singer stood in front of the courthouse, holding up “Free Britney” posters. Some also displayed signs with the words “Jail Jamie” (Arrested Jamie) on them.
Britney’s father controlled wealth
The singer of hits like “Baby One More Time”, “Oops! … I Did It Again” and “Toxic” was temporarily forcibly admitted to a clinic in 2008 because of mental health problems. The father then took over the guardianship of his daughter and thus, in addition to managing her personal interests, also took control of her property. Most recently he was only responsible for financial matters.
In August Spears had succeeded in hiring his own lawyer, Rosengart. Jamie Spears then requested an end to legal guardianship over his daughter. He rejected allegations that he had taken advantage of his daughter.
Guardianship made more and more headlines over the years. Britney Spears complained in June in a highly emotional statement in court that she was “traumatized” and “depressed”: “I just want my life back.”
Several documentaries had recently dealt with the Britney Spears case. According to a documentary recently published by the New York Times, Jamie Spears is said to have secretly installed surveillance devices in his daughter’s bedroom to record their conversations.
On Tuesday, another documentary “Britney vs. Spears” appeared on the Netflix streaming service, in which it is said that the singer tried twice to hire her own lawyer at the beginning of her guardianship. But she was denied this.
