For eight million euros, Prince Charles could be your neighbor

A property for sale in Gloucestershire, UK, has been in the family for decades. Not only that makes Elmestree House Estate so special: the direct neighbor is Prince Charles.

A historic mansion, extensive meadows and forests and a nobleman as a neighbor: what sounds like a scene from the series “Downton Abbey” could soon become a reality – for the new owner of Elmestree House Estate. This is the name of a property that the British real estate company Strutt & Parker is offering for sale for the equivalent of around 8.6 million euros.

There is also a lot on offer for the price. In addition to 117 acres of land, there is a Grade II listed main house with eleven bedrooms built in 1844 in the Elizabethan style. Other smaller adjoining houses offer additional rooms and are partly connected to the large building via a wing that was previously used as a ballroom. The garden is more like a huge park with ponds and old trees. The special thing about it: The property is directly adjacent to Highgrove, Prince Charles’ country residence.

The British heir to the throne acquired the property in 1980 and lives there with his wife Camilla to this day. Lady Diana, on the other hand, who married Charles a year after buying Highgrove, loathed the country estate, although her sons Prince William and Prince Harry spent much of their childhood there. The Princess of Wales preferred the lively London life and preferred to stay in Kensington Palace.

Lady Diana hated life in the country

For Diana, the property in the county of Gloucestershire was like “a prison”, writes her biographer Andrew Morton in his book “Diana: Her True Story”. Not only was the seclusion a thorn in Diana’s side, but also the fact that Charles, then lover Camilla, lived nearby. Camilla is now Charles’ second wife and she appreciates country life as much as he does.

The prominent neighbors make Elmestree House Estate a real rarity. In addition, the property had been in the family since 1949, normally such houses are inherited. According to the real estate agent at Strutt & Parker, “something very special” is that it is now coming onto the real estate market.
