Avatar: The Way of Water, first reactions of critics

While some criticized Cameron for the film’s length (it’s over three hours) or took issue with its sheer number of characters and stories, most seemed impressed, even overwhelmed, by the film’s underwater visuals.

Here’s a look at some first impressions:

Perry Nemiroff of Collider: “#AvatarTheWayOfWater is pretty amazing. I had faith that James Cameron would raise the bar with the effects, but these images are amazing. One impressive painting after another. But what I liked the most is how the technical feats always feel in the service of character and world building.”

Yolanda Machado of ew: “James Cameron is a master of technology… and his direction is more precise here. The film as a whole, while a technological marvel with a stunning world, is just… Dances with Wolves and Free Willy for Gen Z! Urinate beforehand.”

Kara Warner of People: “As an Avatar fan, I had high hopes for #AvatarTheWayofWater and for me it totally delivers. Sure it’s a bit long, but it’s worth it for the gorgeous visuals, the wonderful new characters. A total emotion ”.

Amon Warmann of Empire: So, #AvatarTheWayOfWater : “I liked it, I didn’t love it. The good news is that the 3D is good again (yeah!), and the action is pretty awesome (especially in the final act). But a lot of the stories feel like they have to stop and start, and the high frame rate was hit or miss for me.”

drew taylor of The Wrap: “I have seen #Avatar twice and am overwhelmed by both its technical mastery and its unexpectedly intimate emotional reach. Yes, the world expands and the sequels are mocked, but the characters are the most important thing. Cameron is in top form, especially in the final act. It’s good to have him back.”
