Gloria Estefan was molested as a child. The singer revealed in a new episode of the Facebook show “Red Table Talk”.
Gloria Estefan (64, “Conga”) was sexually abused as a child. That revealed the Cuban-American singer. In the episode, Estefan speaks to her daughter Emily, 26, and niece Lili, 54, and US bachelorette Clare Crawley, 40, and explains that 93 percent of all abused children “know and trust their abusers”. “I know because I’m one of them,” admits Estefan.
“Was glad he paid me so much attention”
Accordingly, the abuse happened when Estefan was nine years old and attended a music school in Miami, Florida. The perpetrator was a “respected member of the community” and her family trusted him. “He was not a close family member, but part of the family,” reports the singer. “He was in a position of power because my mother enrolled me in his music school and he immediately told her how talented I was and that I needed special attention,” she continues. “She was glad he paid me so much attention.”
“It starts small and then goes very quickly,” describes Gloria Estefan. “I knew it was a dangerous situation.” When she rebelled against the perpetrator, he threatened her: “Your father is in Vietnam, your mother is alone. If you tell her, I’ll kill her.” The police had advised her mother not to file a complaint, as a testimony would “traumatize” her daughter.
Clare Crawley also subsequently reported experiences of abuse in her childhood. A priest went wrong on her, and the parents of the former “Bachelorette” later sued the church – unsuccessfully.
