Dispute over “Black Widow”: Scarlett Johansson and Disney come to an agreement

Her film “Black Widow” started simultaneously in the cinemas and on the Disney + streaming platform in the summer. Scarlett Johansson had protested against this.

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson (36) and Disney have, according to US media reports, settled their legal dispute over the new Marvel film “Black Widow”. Details from the comparison from Thursday (local time) were initially not known.

Johansson had filed a lawsuit against the US entertainment giant for breach of contract about two months ago in a Los Angeles court.

The simultaneous publication of “Black Widow” in the cinema and on the Disney + streaming platform violated contractual agreements, Johansson had asserted in the complaint. When the contract was signed, she was promised an exclusive film release on the screen – her earnings are sometimes based on the cinema revenues. Disney had denied the allegations at the time. The lawsuit is “heartless” because it ignores the global consequences of the pandemic.

Now Johansson announced in a statement published by several US media that she was glad to have settled the differences with Disney. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years,” she said. “I look forward to continuing our collaboration in the years to come.” Similar comments came from the Disney group. In the US media, the entertainment giant announced a collaboration on future projects, including “Tower of Terror” – a film based on a popular ride in Disney amusement parks

“Black Widow” was released on July 9th in US cinemas and simultaneously on the streaming channel Disney +. Johansson had played the character from the Marvel universe several times before, but this was her first solo film about the combative agent. The film, directed by Australian Cate Shortland, tells the story of Natasha Romanoff, a spy known as the Black Widow.

According to the “New York Times”, “Black Widow” brought in 158 million dollars worldwide in the first three days of cinema. The film grossed an additional $ 60 million via Disney + on the opening weekend. More and more studios are adopting the new marketing strategy of bringing out films simultaneously on the screen and via streaming. The corona pandemic had last driven this hybrid model.
