Angela Merkel’s term of office is coming to an end – this also creates new working foundations for German comedy. Who will be joked about in the future? A few voices from the German Comedy Award.
With the end of the term of office of Chancellor Angela Merkel, the German comedy industry has to adjust to a new goal for its jokes – which is obviously not going to be easy. At least that’s what drag queen Olivia Jones believes.
“I think one thing will remain of Merkel: that you could parody her wonderfully,” said the 51-year-old on Friday evening on the sidelines of the German Comedy Prize in Cologne. “It is of course an absolute horror for the comedians that Merkel is leaving.”
The candidates for chancellor from the election campaign – Olaf Scholz, Armin Laschet and Annalena Baerbock – are more difficult, explained Jones. “They’re not as easy to parody as our mum with that helmet hairstyle, her diamond and those hanging corners of her mouth,” she said. “I will definitely miss that.”
The comedian Matze Knop – known for his parodies of numerous celebrities from Jürgen Klopp to Franz Beckenbauer – admitted that he really has not yet mastered an Olaf Scholz parody. “I haven’t got it on it yet,” said Knop at the German Comedy Prize. However, he also had a reason: “Because the problem is: Scholz does not speak enough.”
The presenter and comedian Lutz van der Horst (“heute-show”) said with a view to the election for Chancellor: “Of course, from a comedic point of view, Laschet would have been the better.” At the same time, he thinks that in these times one should no longer judge according to such criteria. “I actually used to think more often in humorous models,” explained van der Horst. “But I think: in recent years we’ve had so much to do with clowns.” Donald Trump, for example, is entertaining – “but it’s just very bad for this world.” Therefore, he would like the next government to be simply one thing: good.
