The couple became a symbol of marital stability in the riotous world of rock, even as Charlie played drums for a band that was among the most famous in music history. Shirley and Charlie met in 1961 while they were both studying at the Royal College of Art and were married, initially in secret, three years later.

She still denied it for the first few days, and then she admitted it and everything was fine.”
As for the public, Wyman recalled that Charlie was confronted by a reporter from England’s Daily Express. “I emphatically deny that he is married,” he replied. “It would do a lot of damage to my career if the story got out.” However, Shirley decided not to lie. “We’ve been wanting to get married for a year and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to,” she said. “Months passed and we decided that we could no longer live apart. I’m terribly happy to be Charlie’s wife. It’s just wonderful.”
born as Shirley Ann Shepherd, studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art, where he met Watts, who was studying graphic design and also working as a part-time jazz musician. She became a renowned breeder and presenter of Arabian horses.
“She’s an incredible woman,” Charlie says in the book about Shirley. “My only regret in this life is that I was never home enough. But she always says when I get off tour that I’m a nightmare and she tells me to get back out there.”
