Internet crime: Coop branches in Sweden open after a hacker attack

The till systems of the supermarket chain in Sweden stopped working on Friday evening after a hacker attack. In the meantime 550 of the approximately 800 shops are open again.

Hundreds of stores belonging to the hard-hit Swedish supermarket chain Coop are now open again after a comprehensive hacker attack on a number of companies.

According to a list of the company, around 250 of the around 800 Coop branches in the Scandinavian country were still closed on Tuesday morning and around 550 were reopened. In many of the shops that were open, however, consumers were initially only able to pay by app, while technicians in many places were in the process of getting the POS systems working again.

Coop is one of the leading supermarket chains in Sweden. The cash register systems of several Coop stores fell victim to a hacker attack on Friday evening that also affected hundreds of other companies. Coop had to close almost all stores because of the attack over the weekend. On Sunday, the company managed to switch to payment via its own “Scan & Pay” app in at least some of the stores. Coop has now filed a complaint.

The attack with blackmail software was not aimed directly against Coop, but against the American IT service provider Kaseya. The hackers exploited a vulnerability at Kaseya to attack customers of the IT company with a program that encrypts data and demands a ransom. A group of hackers is demanding $ 70 million in the digital currency Bitcoin for a master key to all affected computers.
